Don't get caught in the Phishing net

From time to time we receive ‘Phishing emails’ that lurk in our inboxes pretending to be a financial institution. As a precaution we would like to urge you to be aware of an email misleadingly claiming to be from your bank to avoid any identity theft.

In some instances identity thieves will warn you of account problems and their aim is to trick customers into clicking through to a fake website where they can collect sensitive personal and financial information for the purpose of stealing money.

To prevent identity theft, if someone calls or sends you an email asking for sensitive information, do not provide it to them. Cybercriminals are not proficient in their spelling and grammar and in most cases this is reflected in their phishing emails; this is another hint that the email is a scam. Professional companies would ensure their staff to look after a proper mass email if it was to be circulated.

Also identify any spoof websites; these are fake websites that imitate renowned companies accompanied with their graphics that appear legitimate. Spoof websites go hand in hand with phishing emails in the attempt to seek your username and password.

In other cases, you might receive a random phone call claiming to be customer service centers; they may be even charging you for either software fixes or computer security. End the phone call and if you want to be safe contact the company and enquire if they’ve made any requests.

Another good pointer is that your financial institution would never ask for your password via email, that’s how you can determine whether the email is authentic. Share your information only when you log into your bank account directly from your browser, do not fall into the trap of clicking on the fraudulent links provided in the email.

If you believe you are a victim of a phishing scam, change your passwords or PINs on your online accounts, contact the bank or online merchant directly and monitor bank and credit card statements frequently.
